Abstract

Sclerotium cepivorum Berk. is the causal agent of white rot in onion (Allium cepa L.), considered one of the
main phytosanitary constraints of the crop. The objective of this study was to evaluate in vitro the antagonistic
effect of a native strain of Trichoderma against S. cepivorum. The Trichoderma strain was isolated using rice
traps and showed rapid growth on PDA medium, with dense cottony mycelium that changed from white to
green upon maturation. In turn, S. cepivorum was isolated from onion bulbs with rot symptoms, showing white
cottony mycelium and sclerotia that evolved from white masses to dark, hardened structures. The in vitro
evaluation was carried out through dual confrontation on PDA medium, under a completely randomized design
with two treatments (control and confrontation) and three replications. After 168 hours of incubation, the
average radial growth of the pathogen in the control was 44.9 mm, while in the presence of Trichoderma it was
reduced to 28.3 mm, with a radial growth inhibition percentage (PICR) of 37.9%. The interaction corresponded
to grade 2 on the Bell scale, where Trichoderma colonized two-thirds of the medium and significantly limited
the pathogen.
