Abstract

This study investigates the feasibility of using exotic skins and natural tanning methods in the tannery industry with a focus on sustainability and circular economy. For this work, several tests were carried out to evaluate the strength and elasticity of different types of hides, including shark, tubon, mahi, sea bass, mullet and pineapple skins using natural tanning methods such as carrot and iodized salt. The results showed that these alternatives are not only viable, but also more sustainable, offering functional properties comparable or even superior to those of cattle hides. In addition, a significant reduction in chemical waste generation was observed when natural tanning methods were used. Although the findings are promising, it suggests the need for further studies to improve sustainable practices in the tannery industry, thus contributing to global sustainability and moving towards a more circular economy.

The study focuses on sustainability in the tanning industry, investigating exotic leathers and natural tanning techniques within the framework of a circular economy. Detailed tests were conducted on tilapia, bovine, and ovine leathers. Additionally, other alternatives such as shark, tubón, dorado, corvina, lisa, and piñas were qualitatively explored, using natural ingredients like carrot and iodized salt in the tanning process. Through rigorous tests, the resistance and elasticity of tilapia, bovine, and ovine leathers were compared with the mentioned alternatives. The results suggest that these options are not only viable but in some cases may surpass conventional leather in terms of properties. Moreover, their sustainability is highlighted, evidenced by the reduction of chemical waste in the tanning process. Despite the promising findings, the study emphasizes the need for further research. The goal is to refine these techniques and solidify sustainable practices in the tanning industry, driving a more circular and environmentally-friendly economy.
