Application of propolis and ethanol in the treatment of subclinical mastitis in production cows at the Santa Rosa farm, pioter parish, Tulcán canton

Abstract

Subclinical mastitis affects approximately 70% of dairy farms in Ecuador, causing significant economic losses for producers. This study evaluated the efficacy of an alternative treatment for subclinical mastitis in dairy cows using a solution of 50% propolis and 50% ethanol at the Santa Rosa farm, located in Pioter parish, Tulcán canton, Carchi province. For the initial diagnosis, the California Mastitis Test (CMT) was performed on twenty lactating cows. Cows diagnosed with subclinical mastitis received 10 cc of the propolis and ethanol solution every two hours. After ten days of treatment, the CMT was repeated to evaluate the treatment's efficacy. The results were analyzed using InfoStat 2020 statistical software. Initially, the CMT indicated that 60% of the cows were positive in all four mammary quarters, 20% in three quarters, 10% in two quarters, and 10% in only one quarter. After the treatment, 80% of the treated cows were fully cured in all four quarters, while the remaining 20% continued to show positive results in one quarter. Economically, the propolis and ethanol treatment proved to be more cost-effective, with a cost of $2.08 for 40 ml of solution, compared to the conventional pharmaceutical treatment with Cefaspur, which costs $5.30 for 20 ml.
